This course equips historians in training with the skills to transform raw sources into structured data for analysis. Through practical seminars, you will learn to organise information in spreadsheets, clean it with OpenRefine, and build a relational database to answer complex questions. The course then turns to textual analysis, introducing Voyant Tools for large-scale text exploration and MAXQDA for qualitative coding and mixed-methods research. Finally, it considers new digital approaches, including the use of generative AI for data analysis and Omeka for creating online historical exhibits.
The course follows a workshop format in which you learn through hands-on practice. As there is no set textbook, attendance is essential. By the end, you will be able to manage a digital project from data preparation to final presentation. Assessment consists of building a database or content analysis project and submitting a 1,500-word methodology paper that explains the process and presents initial findings. The aim is to demonstrate a clear grasp of the methods covered.
