The Debate - Creative Analysis 100 points
This will probably be the only debate of the election, the single time that the two candidates appear together on stage with the issues in between. Consequently, we have the responsibility and opportunity to look and listen. Closely.
We will spend the next two class periods together taking this thing apart!=
This analysis assignment is vital for you to be prepared for our discussions. It will count as 100 points… Make sure that you provide it with your full attention.
Watch the entire debate. I’m sure that if you want to, you could find debate snippets on the web, maybe even enough to do the entire assignment. If you do that, you will not capture the entirety of its impact. You will not be prepared to add to our discussion and you probably won’t fare so well on the assignment. So, roll ‘em up baby!
As you watch - make notations and time stamps. That way you can go back and find them as needed. Plus you’ll be able to use your notes as we walk through the debate these next two classes. Timestamps matter and help you find your support..
Creative Analysia Assignment
1 - Trump in a word
After watching the debate choose one word that best describes Donald Trump’s vibe throughout. He demeanor. His performance. His attitude. Follow that up with a paragraph or two supporting your position. Identify in the debate a particular place (and time) where he best captures what you think to be this description. Note why you chose this place and time.
2 - Harris in a word
After watching the debate choose one word that best describes Kamala Harris's vibe throughout. Her demeanor. Her performance. Her attitude. Follow that up with a paragraph or two supporting your position. Identify in the debate a particular place (and time) where she best captures what you think to be this description. Note why you chose this place and time.
Topic - nothing that relates to your answers above
There are so many places in this debate that you can turn to for the following two questions. Make sure that your selections are not connected to answers one and two. The key will be your support. I want you to choose a segment in the debate - a statement of the chosen candidate, on a topic that interests you. First, go to the moderator - and cite the topic… Next, identify the time stamp. And then summarize the candidate’s response to the question. This should be a paragraph or two. Then I want to hear your take on that response. Was it adequate to the question - yes or no?. Why or why not? Be detailed in your evaluation.
Topic. Response. Your take.
3 - Donald Trump - topic of interest
4 - Kamala Harris - topic of interest
Non verbals - Matter
Non-verbals make a huge difference in a televised debate. 67 million Americans tuned in. That is nearly 20% of the total population. Almost double the number of people currently living in Ukraine. They listened and watched. How the candidate looked on stage - the facial and body language. The attitude and vibe of the candidate make a big difference. I want you here to explore that part of the debate.
Tell me everything you notice from the two candidates. Sight time stamps and descriptions that support your position. Be thorough in your evaluation.
5 - Donald Trump - non verbal
6 - Kamala Harris - non verbal
YOU - you are an undecided voter who lives in Dunn County in the state of Wisconsin. You are a swing state voter. Your vote matters. You tuned in to the debate because you know that and you realize the importance of your vote. I want you do do a couple of things here.
7 - Who AM I?
First-person - I want you to get creative here. Provide me with your backstory - you live in Menominee. How old are you? What is your job? Your marital status? Your family makeup? Post me a couple of photos of Menominee Falls - that capture your take on your hometown and your life. Create a narrative of you as an American - in this place, in this time, in this world.
8 - My thoughts on the Debate
First-person - You are still the individual from number seven above. You watched the debate. Maybe with friends. Tell me how it went. Tell me your thoughts about the debate. Tell me the impact that it had on you as a resident of Menominee Falls. Did it impact your decision on this election? Provide me a first-person account of your feelings at the end of the debate. At the end of the night.
This is a big assignment. I expect to see some good work!
